PROTECT YOUR PRIVACY...Remove Your Name & Info From Spokeo

There is a new website I learned about tonight that I want to share with my readers. It's basically an ONLINE search tool for people. Pulls up all kinds of information on just about everyone! NO JOKE! It's called: It's legit and you will pull up just about all your own personal information if you search your name. I did mine & my husband's and proceeded, very quickly to have it being processed to be removed from the site.

To do this, follow these simple steps:
To remove Phone/Name Listings:
1. Locate the listing you want removed
2. Copy the URL. The URL can be found on the top of your browser and should look something like:
http://www.spokeo.com
3. Go to
http://www.spokeo.com/privacy
4. Paste the URL from step 2
5. Provide your email address (required to verify that you are not an automated bot)
6. Check your Inbox for the confirmation email, and click on the link on the bottom to complete removal process
7. The directory listing will become flagged and should be removed within 1 business day

Just thought I'd give you the heads up! This was disturbing to me! It's much to easy for people to breach your privacy and it's so open online. PROTECT YOUR PRIVACY and remove yourself from this website immediately!

Thank you so much this is awful. I have begun removing some but they only allow so many. You have to come back and do it every now and again.

Kudos to you for helping your readers figure out how to remove their private info from Spokeo.

We have also posted a thorough "How To" tutorial, in case you were interested.

http://www.reputationdefender.com/how-to/remove-your-name-from-spokeo-and-other-people-finder-sites/

If the manual process is too labor intensive, I recommend checking out ReputationDefender's MyPrivacy service (http://www.reputationdefender.com/myprivacy). With MyPrivacy, we can help individuals remove their info from Spokeo as well as a number of other people-search websites automatically through a simple point and click interface. Additionally, because we know how important privacy is to individuals working in the law enforcement community, if you are a law enforcement or judicial officer just give us a call at 1-888-720-3332 and we'll hook you up with MyPrivacy for free.

WOW!! So disturbing even shows a picture of our house and neighborhood. I never received an e-mail confirmation yet, but I am going to keep trying. Thanks so much.

Thank you SO much! This type of thing is so annoying! I hate having my address out there especially with a picture! (At least it didn't show my actual house, but how smart does a person have to be these days in order to find me when my address was posted for the whole world to see???) I just removed the listings for myself and my husband. At least it was easy, thanks to your tutorial. I received the confirmation email less than 5 minutes after placing the requests.

I will be mentioning this to my own blog readers, plus my family members, friends, and anyone else who wants to listen.

Thanks again!

Blessings,
Cara

I really appreciate your sending this information out to the public. I was not aware of this site at all. I checked on my name, and most of the information was wrong; however, some of it was correct. There was even a picture of our house. I immediately deleted all of my information as well as that of my husband. I received confirmation that everything was deleted. When I checked again, there was no record of my husband or me. Thank you so very much. You deserve a gold star--maybe two!

Unfortunately, anything you put out onto the internet or even some that you don't (phone number, address, etc) (including in your blog profile, facebook, twitter, etc) can be searched. This website is just making it easier. If you really don't want your information out there, use an alias, your initials or refuse to publish your phone number/address or make any of your information public.

I searched my name and it came up with someone else's address but my photo. LOL! (I have it in my twitter profile). Thank you for sharing though - I think most people don't realize the implications of signing up for all these "social networking" sites and how important privacy settings are.

I wrote the following on spokeo's blog, but it's awaiting moderation...what are the chance's they'll post this:

"My daughter works with the public, and one client came in and said he’d looked her up on spokeo.com before he arrived for his appointment, and that now he knows where she lives and whether she’s single. AWESOME service, spokeo…making it easy for people who don’t know you to find out stuff even your neighbors don’t know. Brave New World, alright."

I'm very concerned that spokeo thinks it's a keen idea to make it easier to get info centralized that is already public, if you just know where to look for it (basement of local real estate listings? census reports?)

Great! I passed it along too. Thank you very much.
