Okay so as a mommy who is TERRIFIED of the dentist ( I avoid them at all cost), it's been an issue for me to take my kids to the dentist. I know it's wrong, cause they need to have their teeth examined, cleaned, etc., but I can't even come to grips with going myself.
So, today I am taking my 2 year old and 5 year old for their first dentist appointments. There is a part of me that would wait even longer...but another part of me that knows they need to have the dentist look at their teeth and make sure things are all okay.
Have you ever taken a 2 year old to the dentist before? I am very nervous about how he'll respond to everything. I can't stand having the x-rays done (it always hurts me and makes me gag)...and I am not sure if they will do that on my kids (though I am pretty sure they will) and I am praying that my little guy won't get hysterical. He's got a bit of a cold, but he's the main reason I am taking the kids in. Since we've been living in Connecticut, we've had well water and I don't believe there is fluoride in the water. I'm noticing discoloration spots on his teeth and it's worrying me. I've never noticed it with my other kids...hence the sudden dental appointment.
Can I ask that you pray for me? Please! Just stepping foot into the office makes my heart race and having to take to young kids in makes me really anxious. It may seem silly to some, but it's a HUGE deal to me! I know they will be fine, in fact, they will probably do great and it not even phase them...but for me it's traumatic.
What age were your kids taken to their first dental appointment? Why? Was it because of their age, their doctor recommended it, there was a problem you noticed, etc.? What prompted you to make the appointment and take them in? I'd love to know!

My 2 oldest, 21 and 24 yrs old, went when they were 2 yrs old. My two youngest are over 2 and have not been to a dentist. There are no issues with their teeth. I don't like dentists, either and so I feel your pain! I grew up going to a "quack" dentist and there lies my fear. One of these days soon my two youngest will go.
I feel your pain Courtney! I procrastinated taking my first until after he turned five. The dentists say to take them for their first visit at age 2 or 3, but, I didn't see anything wrong, so I just put it off. His xrays went smoothly and the cleaning went good, too, but I give the credit to the dental hygienist. We had to switch dentists, and he had to get new xrays and another cleaning - you would have thought they were torturing him! He screamed the WHOLE time. He was hysterical. So, needless to say, I'm procrastinating again on taking my 2-year old daughter. If I can pass on any words of wisdom, it's just like them getting shots. If you can stay calm (and maybe happy), it might help keep their nerves down. I have phobias with shots, but now I'm a pro at putting on a smile for the kids. Good luck!!
I am actually taking my 2 year old daughter tomorrow to the dentist. We've been living with my sister-in-law for 6 months. She has well water that we know doesn't have fluoride in it. While brushing my daughter's teeth I've noticed discoloration and last week I'm pretty sure I found cavities. So I urgently made her an appointment with a pediatric dentist. Those people work with kids EVERY DAY. Not like just a family dentist that gets kids in there every once in a while. Let me know how it goes. I didn't believe 6 months or no fluoride would hurt my daughter's teeth. She uses fluoride toothpaste(and she always swallows it lol.) and I thought that was enough. I feel like this is totally my fault. I cried for a few hours after I found the cavities.
